Hi Kristi. Could you share your journey to becoming an expert in your current position?

My journey to becoming the US Chief Technology Officer at Kyndryl has been anything but traditional. It all began in the trenches of software engineering, where I built and supported numerous systems. Back in those days, you did it all, which meant learning the true meaning of building resilient technology.

Driven by a desire to effect change and have a more significant impact on business strategy, I transitioned into architecture and eventually led Enterprise Architecture for a prominent US-based bank. This experience broadened my perspective, encompassing not just the technical side but also the people, operating models, governance, and risk management. I realized that businesses needed access to quality data to drive strategic insights and decisions.

This realization steered me towards the realms of data and AI, where I focused on creating a culture around these powerful tools. I worked on building effective governance, assessing and mitigating risks, and modernizing organizations in support of business strategies. My roles have spanned from being a Chief Data Officer to leading Global Data and AI initiatives at a large professional services organization.

Now, as the US CTO for Kyndryl, I bring a unique blend of business acumen and technological expertise to the table. I always start with the business need or help define a business strategy. While I love technology, my true passion lies in how it can advance and transform businesses. It’s not just about geeking out—it’s about leveraging technology, data, and AI to drive meaningful transformation and success.

What do you love the most about your current role?

Kyndryl is a relatively new company. I have the opportunity to influence the path of the CTO group as well as the entire US division. I find it rewarding to contribute to defining a future vision and assisting an organization in reaching it. It’s thrilling to collaborate with such a seasoned team and create something together.

What are the three major trends do you foresee in your industry in the next 12 months?

Certainly, Generative AI is set to be the biggest trend. In the next few months, companies will move from trying out large language models (LLMs) and Generative AI to actually using them in a big way to bring about real change.

Modernization is also crucial. Businesses will focus on updating their systems and processes to stay competitive and keep up with technological advancements.

Sustainability, a key aspect of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors, will continue to grow in importance as companies strive to adopt more responsible practices.

Lastly, cybersecurity will remain a top priority. As cyber threats become more advanced, robust security measures will be essential to protect data and maintain trust in digital systems.

What are your thoughts on diversity and inclusion in your field? How important is it to have authentic conversations with leaders, professionals, and changemakers to create more acceptance across the globe?

We still have significant strides to make in the tech industry when it comes to diversity and inclusion. It’s an essential aspect, much like in any other field, and there are still lingering stereotypes about people working in technology. However, it is precisely this diversity of thought and approach that fuels our drive for innovation and the generation of new ideas.

Understanding each other begins with having genuine conversations—authentic, respectful dialogues. Asking questions and learning from one another is crucial. The more we understand, the more we foster acceptance and collaboration. This is how we will continue to break down barriers and create an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.

What has been your most career-defining moment that you are proud of?

One of my most defining career moments was when I decided to take a leap of faith after spending over two decades at a single company. Venturing into uncharted territory was both exhilarating and daunting. This pivotal experience taught me invaluable lessons and equipped me with a diverse skill set that ultimately led me to my current role.

Is there a particular person you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are?

Reflecting on my career, I realize that every individual I’ve had the privilege to work with has left a mark on my journey. However, if I were to single out one person, it would undoubtedly be my mother. She instilled in me the values of hard work, ambition, and compassion from an early age. Her unwavering support and teachings have been a guiding light, helping me navigate through the challenges and successes that have defined my professional life.

How do you keep your mind healthy and stay resilient? And how do you motivate your team?

What works for me might be surprising. To maintain a healthy mind and resilience, I find it essential to give my mind a break by focusing on something entirely different. Often, this means diving into new DIY projects, much to my husband’s amusement. These projects serve as a mental distraction and allow me to learn something new, offering a fresh perspective when I return to my professional tasks.

In terms of motivating my team, I have discovered that openness and genuine interest go a long way. By sharing my own experiences, listening to their perspectives, and expressing gratitude for their efforts, I foster a collaborative and motivated environment. When the team feels appreciated and understood, they tend to be more engaged and productive.

What is your favorite quote?

I joined the Peloton community several years ago. One of the instructors shared a profound insight about self-talk. They emphasized that “the most powerful thing anyone can say to us is what we say to ourselves.” This resonated deeply with me, as the internal voice of self-doubt can be incredibly detrimental, just as a positive inner voice can be immensely empowering. The same instructor often recites the mantra, “I am, I can, I will, I do.” I find myself repeating this mantra in various situations, drawing strength and motivation from its simple yet powerful affirmation.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Wherever my career path leads me, I am committed to challenging the status quo and encouraging innovative thinking. By persistently asking “why can’t we,” I aim to inspire others to think creatively and push boundaries, ultimately driving impactful change.

What advice would you give to anyone starting out on their career in your industry?

Don’t be afraid to explore new roles and expand your expertise. Embracing diverse experiences not only broadens your perspective but also enhances your ability to make a significant impact in your field. Each role you undertake adds a new chapter to your professional journey, allowing you to see the bigger picture and drive meaningful change.
