Hi Tina. Tell us about your career path. What experiences have brought you here?

My career path has been defined by a blend of strategic leadership and hands-on experience across top organizations, focusing on data management, governance, digital transformation, and leadership. I began as a Data Management Consultant at Cognizant Technology Solutions nearly two decades ago, during a time when the industry was just starting to recognize the importance of data. Over the years, I have witnessed a paradigm shift from traditional data management to a data-driven approach that leverages AI and machine learning for predictive insights.

My roles at Cognizant Technology Solutions, EY, The Coca-Cola Company, Accenture, Capgemini, Deloitte, and now Sanofi have provided me with diverse experiences in tackling critical business challenges and offering thought leadership in Digital Transformation and Data Modernization. These positions have honed my skills in data strategy, managing complex programs, and engaging with C-suite executives. These experiences, combined with my B-Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, MBA from one of the best B-schools of India and an Executive MBA from Harvard Business School, have further shaped my business acumen and leadership style.

Having worked in the advisory board of Standards Council of Canada, a federal crown corporation who worked with the Prime Minister’s Office of Canada in defining the data governance roadmap of Canada’s digital assets has enhanced my profile as a visionary leader in the data governance industry. Additionally, my commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and my involvement in women’s leadership and technology groups, underscore my dedication to mentoring and supporting aspiring female professionals in technology and data fields.

In summary, my career is a testament to the transformative power of data and leadership, driven by the passion for innovation, strategic vision, and a commitment to empowering others in the technology sector.

What are the top three data governance challenges businesses should keep an eye on in 2024?

In 2024, businesses must address three critical data governance challenges:

Data Privacy and Security Compliance: Evolving regulations like GDPR, CCPA, EHDS and new international standards demand rigorous data protection and compliance. Organizations must implement robust data governance and security measures, conduct regular audits, and stay updated on regulatory changes to avoid fines and reputational damage.

Data Quality and Integration: As reliance on data-driven decision-making grows, maintaining high data quality and seamless system integration is crucial. Poor data quality leads to inaccurate insights, and integration issues hinder data usage. Establishing standardized data management practices and investing in advanced integration tools are essential.

Ethical AI and Bias Mitigation: With the rise of AI, ensuring ethical data use and mitigating biases in AI models are paramount. Developing transparent data and AI governance frameworks, implementing bias detection mechanisms, and promoting ethical AI practices are necessary to build trust and fairness.

Proactively addressing these challenges enhances data governance, driving innovation and growth.

What are your thoughts on diversity and inclusion in your field? How important is it to have authentic conversations with leaders, professionals, and changemakers to create more acceptance across the globe?

Diversity and inclusion are crucial in data and AI. When we have a diverse team, we benefit from a variety of perspectives and experiences, which sparks innovation and improves problem-solving. Inclusion ensures these diverse voices are not just present but truly heard and integrated into our decision-making processes, resulting in more fair and effective outcomes.

Having genuine conversations with leaders, professionals, and changemakers is key to building acceptance and understanding worldwide. These discussions help dismantle stereotypes, address biases, and foster a culture of respect and collaboration. They also push organizations to reevaluate their practices and commit to real change.

By having open and honest discussions about diversity and inclusion, we can create a more inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute. This not only leads to better business results but also helps build a more just and equitable society. When we prioritize diversity and have authentic conversations, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and innovative field.

In your academic or work career, were there any mentors who have helped you grow along the way? What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with several mentors who have significantly contributed to my professional and personal growth. While it’s challenging to single out just one, a few have been particularly influential in my life. My parents always advised me to “lead with empathy and integrity,” a principle that has been a cornerstone of my leadership style. During my time at The Coca-Cola Company, Michelle Arlotta Routh, the former CIO/Chief Enterprise Architect of Coke, taught me that “if you have been blessed with kindness from someone, pass on the baton to others—that’s all that’s needed.” Additionally, Krish Banerjee, the Managing Director at Accenture during my tenure there, advised me to view any problem as an opportunity and approach it with a solution-centric mindset. All these great advices holistically have guided me through complex projects and leadership roles, driving my success and personal fulfillment.

The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is, to be a life-long student. This mindset has profoundly impacted my career growth in the fast-paced industry of data and AI. Continuously seeking knowledge has kept me at the forefront of industry advancements, enabling me to drive innovation and adapt to evolving technologies. It has fostered a culture of curiosity and continuous improvement within my teams, encouraging them to explore new ideas and solutions. This commitment to lifelong learning has also helped me navigate complex challenges, develop strategic insights, and maintain a competitive edge, ultimately contributing to my success and leadership in the field.

If you could have a one-hour meeting with someone famous who is alive, who would it be and why?

If I could have a one-hour meeting with someone famous who is alive, it would be with Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet Inc. and Google. His leadership in driving innovation, managing large-scale operations, and navigating the complexities of the tech industry would provide invaluable insights. I admire his ability to balance technological advancement with ethical considerations and would love to discuss strategies for leveraging data and AI responsibly to drive meaningful and impactful change in the industry.

What is your secret to striking a work-life balance?

The concept of work-life balance often implies a perfect equilibrium between professional responsibilities and personal life, but in reality, achieving such a balance is more about integration and prioritization. Rather than trying to divide time equally, it’s about being adaptable and recognizing that priorities can shift.

There are periods when work demands more attention, and other times when personal life takes precedence. The key is to remain flexible and responsive to these changes. By setting clear boundaries, being present in the moment, and taking care of mental and physical well-being, it’s possible to navigate the complexities of both work and life in a way that feels fulfilling and sustainable.

Additionally, I prioritize physical and mental well-being through regular exercise, mindfulness practices, and spending quality time with family and friends. By staying organized and focusing on what truly matters, I can maintain a healthy balance that supports both my professional achievements and personal happiness.

What is one of your favorite parts of the workweek? How does it encourage or inspire you? Do you have a favorite way to recharge during the workday?

One of my favorite parts of the workweek is our brainstorming sessions. These meetings foster creativity and collaboration, allowing team members to freely share ideas and explore innovative solutions. The energy and enthusiasm during these sessions are incredibly inspiring and motivate us to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Additionally, reflecting on the week’s accomplishments, acknowledging the team’s hard work, and setting the stage for the week ahead provide a sense of closure and achievement. This routine not only boosts morale but also reinforces our collective commitment to continuous improvement.

To recharge during the workday, I love taking a few minutes to enjoy a cup of tea while listening to some calming music. This simple ritual helps me relax and regain focus, ensuring I stay productive and balanced throughout the day.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

In the next five years, I see myself continuing to drive innovation and transformation in the field of data and AI, possibly taking on even more strategic and influential roles within the industry. My aim is to further develop and implement cutting-edge data and AI governance frameworks and AI-driven solutions that can significantly impact healthcare and other sectors. Additionally, I hope to expand my involvement in mentoring and supporting the next generation of leaders, fostering a more diverse and inclusive environment. Ultimately, I envision contributing to shaping a future where data and AI are leveraged ethically and effectively to create meaningful and positive change.

What is a piece of career advice you have been given that you would pass on to others?

I don’t believe in giving advice unless asked for. But if I have to give any career advice, I’d like to share is to venture outside your comfort zone. Embrace new and challenging tasks to prepare for future roles and enhance your skills. Engage in upskilling and reskilling by taking on leadership roles and working cross-functionally. Also, seek value in feedback or criticism. Use feedback as an opportunity for growth, focusing on the constructive elements rather than the delivery method. Lastly, cultivate perseverance. Success often requires time and resilience. If faced with rejection or challenges, continue refining and improving your approach. These practices are key to long-term career advancement and personal growth.
