The following excerpts are taken from the interview.
Hi Rob. Could you share your journey to becoming an expert in your current position?
My career has been built on helping organizations thrive at the intersection of business and technology. This started in the early .com era, then SaaS, then big data so AI really is a natural next step in strategy innovation.
Reflecting on my career journey, I began in various sales and business development roles within several technology companies. Unlike many AI leaders who typically have an engineering and IT background, my foundation was in sales and business development. I later incorporated engineering and technical skills into my tool kit.
Over the past 15 years, my focus has been on data and AI, starting at Teradata. This path led me to several leadership roles, culminating in my current position as Managing Director of Data and AI at BDO USA.
What do you love the most about your current role?
I am a people person by nature, so the answer is easy – our team at BDO. I appreciate the incredible team I work with—we have a fantastic group of people doing remarkable things. I am fortunate to be on the front lines of the AI revolution, helping organizations leverage AI to their advantage. As a lifelong learner, I am constantly gaining insights into what works and what doesn’t in the AI space, which keeps my role both challenging and exciting.
What role do you believe data and AI play in driving innovation and competitiveness?
It really boils down to two areas of opportunity: transformation and growth. In 2024, there has been immense pressure on organizations and leaders to grow their businesses. As we look into the future, AI will be crucial in addressing this need by enabling organizations to do more with less, ultimately driving profitable revenue growth. Whether it’s automating processes, utilizing AI assistants for low-level manual tasks, or generating new insights, AI will help many stay competitive and expand their businesses.
You have been a recipient of distinguished awards and recognition throughout your career including recently being named as one of the top 25 AI Consulting Leaders in August 2024. Our readers would love to know the secret mantra behind your success.
Show up every day with a mindset of service, learning and gratitude. I’ve always felt that if you take the approach of helping people be successful and being grateful for what you have, you can’t go wrong.
If you could have a one-hour meeting with someone famous who is alive, who would it be and why?
Michael Jordan. I grew up in Chicago in the 90’s watching all of the Bull’s championships, played basketball myself, and have admired him from day one and I still do. Is he available for dinner?
How do you stay current with emerging trends and advancements in data science and AI?
Reading, research and collaboration. In the AI world, it is important to learn, absorb and ultimately practice as much as you can as well as engage with the innovators in person who are driving transformation.
Is there a particular person you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are?
I am a lucky person and have so many who have supported me over the years. First my wife Amorie for always supporting me and for having my back. And second, I have several great mentors, colleagues and bosses now and historically that have guided me along the way.
What is your favorite quote?
“Teamwork isn’t about ego. It’s about sacrifice and trust. When you have that, you have a chance to do something special.” Mike Singletary, Chicago Bears
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
I foresee myself helping people as an AI advocate, bridging the gap for normal business leaders and practical AI applications for positive impact.
What advice would you give to organizations just starting their data and AI journey?
Just get going and don’t overthink it. The stars will never align, and things won’t be perfect. It’s best to be curious and explore for you and your organization.
